Who is Dave?

A bilingual interpretive naturalist serving Boulder and surrounding communities

Dave Sutherland is an award-winning field naturalist, now retired from the city of Boulder’s Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) department. In addition to over 25 years working in the Boulder area, Dave has led outdoor education programs in California, Idaho and Costa Rica, and has trained guides in the Galapagos Islands.

Dave is a self-professed natural science geek who uses stories, games and activities to inspire others with his love of nature.

He has been training for his job since he was four years old, when he began collecting rocks and butterflies and drawing his own bird books with crayons.

Dave is fluent in Spanish and

leads nature hikes and programs for Boulder’s

Hispanic community.


Dave was a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras from 1984 - 1986, and did both his Senior Honors Thesis and Master’s Thesis in Costa Rica while living with host families. He worked for three years as the Head of Environmental Education at the Charles Darwin Research Station in the Galapagos Islands. He has a long love affair with Latin America!
